11 inmates recaptured after Madagascar prison break

The police service in Madagascar has revealed that out of the 31 prison inmates that escaped from their prisons, 11 have been recaptured.

The prisoners were reported to have escaped on Sunday, August 23, 2020, from the south-eastern prison of the country.

The police service and the military service in the country were deployed to Farafanga prison. This was because, the prisoners threw rocks and shotguns against the prison officers who were on duty. This led the police officers on duty in the prison to retaliate by firing guns killling 20 inmates.

The ministry of justice in Madagascar has stated that 19 prisoners have succeeded in escaping the prison as the security personnel is also searching for them.

Mass prison escapes (prison break) have happened frequently in Madagascar in the 21st century. In 2016, there were about 40 detainees who broke out from a high-security prison in Toliary in the south of the country.

Rights groups say people are often held for years in prison in Madagascar as they await trial. In conclusion, prison break is not new to the world.
