Spanish Football giants Barcelona has terminated the contract of their Sporting Director Eric Abidal. The former Sporting Director of Barcelona was a French international. This came after about 24 hours of sacking head coach Quique Setien.
Barcelona has found tings difficult this season as they recorded their first trophyless season in many years. This latest contract termination is the beginning of a new dawn for the Catalonians. The Catalans are hoping to rebuild their team to make great impacts in world football.
Barcelona were humiliated 8:2 by Bayern Munich in a 10-goal thriller in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final stage. After this match, two staff of the team have all lost their job, with other staff at stake. After a very bad trophyless 2019/2020 season, Barcelona are looking to take a new shape.
A statement released by Barcelona with regards to the termination of Eric Abidal’s contract reads: “The club publicly expresses its gratitude to Eric Sylvain Abidal for the professionalism, commitment, and dedication he has always shown towards all the estates that make up the Barcelona family and wishes him luck and success in the future.”
Eric Abidal is 40 years old and a former defender for Barcelona. He took up the role of sporting director from Roberto Fernandez in the summer of 2018. He played for the Spanish side from 2007 and left in 2013. Abidal is a four-time Spanish league winner and a two-time UEFA Champions League winner.
Barcelona has sacked Quique Setien after just 8 months and appointed former Dutch head coach Ronald Koeman to take over as head coach.
The Barcelona presidency will be contested for in March 2021 as the Catalans are looking to recruit new faces to help the team.
