2020 in general has not been a very great year. It has come with many uncertainties and setback as COVID 19 put the world on a standstill.
There are some wonderful or strange football moments in 2020 that is not normal to the previous years. The greatest one was the absence of football for over 5 months. Here are 8 moments that has changed the face of the greatest game in the world.
1. Liverpool won the Premier League trophy for the first time in 30 years.
Jurgen Klopp and his men broke their 30 year drought for Premier League trophy with a whopping 99 points. They made their year a great one as they had previously won the Champions League in 2019.
2. Ballon D’or was cancelled for the first time.
The Ballon D’or which is the award for the best player of the year was cancelled due to COVID 19. The previous award was won by Lionel Messi after facing competition from Virgil Van Dijk.
European Golden Boots was won in Serie A.
The European Golden Boots is the award given to the player with most goals in Europe’s club leagues. For over 10 years, the award was won by the Spanish League. It alternated between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo until Luis Suarez won one. This year has been different as Ciro Immobile from Italian side Lazio won the honour.
4. Lionel Messi leaving Barcelona.
Football’s greatest player, Lionel Messi, in 2020 is leaving the Camp Nou. The 33-year-old Argentine has handed in a transfer request to Barcelona after playing there for about 20 years. Although one left is left on Messi’s contract, there is a contract clause which allows him to leave anytime convenient.
5. So-called farmers league dominated Europe.
The French ligue 1 and the German Bundesliga teams dominated the UEFA Champions League. The semifinals of the competition featured Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig of Germany and Paris Saint Germain and Lyon.
6. Manchester United lost three semifinals in a season.
Manchester United are the first to in Europe to lose three semifinals in a year. They lost the FA Cup semifinals to Chelsea. They also lost the Carabao Cup semifinals to Manchester City and lost the Europa League semifinals to Sevilla.
7. Barcelona record most humiliating defeat in Champions League.
Spanish side Barcelona had their most humiliating defeat in the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League against Bayern Munich. The lost 8:2 in a one legged quarter final match.
8. One Legged UCL Knockout Stages For the first time.
The UEFA Champions League knockout stages were played on one leg for the first time. Due to COVID 19, they games were played on neutral ground in Portugal and Germany.
