The good news INFOGHMEDIA convened for unemployed graduates in Ghana has it that the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr Ignatius Baffour Awuah has revealed the government has instituted a Tripartite Technical Committee that will come out soon with modalities for implementing the National Unemployment Insurance Scheme.

At a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, [September 16, 2020], Mr. Baffour Awuah said the scheme when operational will focus on providing direct income support to workers who will lose their jobs or suffer pay cuts in the event of a social or economic crisis.

“The scheme would also offer opportunities for training, re-training, job search support, apprenticeship, and internships to enable those who lose their jobs to re-adjust. It is expected to be a contributory scheme for workers,” the Minister said.

The Minister said the proposal is for the scheme to be managed by a National Unemployment Trust Fund with contributions from employers and workers.

On the workplace transmission cases of COVID-19, Mr. Baffour Awuah said the Ministry in collaboration with the National Tripartite Committee issued a 10-Point Communique on Workplace Safety.

He said the purpose was to consolidate the World Health Organization (WHO) and Ghana Health Service (GHS) Preventive Protocols as well as enhance routine inspections by the Labour Department and the Department of Factories Inspectorate.

”I personally led a team to inspect randomly selected workplaces to ascertain for myself the level of compliance with COVID-19 protocols,” he said.

The minister said some of the institutions visited within the Greater Accra, Tema, Nsawam and its environs were in the manufacturing, service, retail, and recycling sub-sectors.

According to Mr. Baffour Awuah, the visit was aimed at ensuring strict compliance with and enforcement of the COVID-19 protocols and guidelines outlined by the government.

”I am happy to report that 80% of the establishments inspected were complying with the guidelines prescribed by the government and the WHO. I wish to entreat all employers and workers to continue to adhere to the prescribed protocols to ensure safety at the workplace,“ he said.
