One suspect and a member of the Western Togoland secessionist group has died whilst in police custody.
Reports indicate the person lost his life on October 29, 2020 in the custody of police aiding in investigation. The dead suspect was among the mass suspects who were flown to Accra for investigations. This was due to their involvement in the unrest by the Volta secessionists in September.
Counsel for the suspects, Theophilus Donkor, Counsel for the suspects confirmed the unfortunate incident to one media house. He stated that, “as far as I know, I can fully confirm to you that one of those persons is no more with us.”
Additionally, Theophilus Donkor stated that the family of the deceased are yet to receive a formal complaint about the incident. He expressed his worry for the police for not initially informing the family of the deceased.
“You know that as far as Ghana is concerned, the dead body belongs to the family. This is known to the police. They should have consulted the family by this time, or they are deliberately deciding not to communicate that information to the family,” Theophilus added.
In conclusion, the name of the deceased has been withheld for the mean time.
