Zimbabwe hold Algeria to a 2-2 draw in AFCON Qualifiers


Zimbabwe held Algeria to a 2-2 draw in Group H of the AFCON qualifiers at the National Sports Stadium in Harare. The fourth round ended with the current title holders, Algeria, qualifying for the 2022 African Cup of Nations.

Algeria began the game on a high note with Montpellier forward, Andy Delort, scoring in the 34th minute. Four minutes later, Riyad Mahrez doubled the lead for the desert foxes of Algeria. With just one minute to the end of the first half, 30-year-old Knowledge Musona equalized one goal for Zimbabwe to boost their hopes in the game.

As Zimbabwe possessed the game and created more chances, Algeria had more shots on goal. The game became very interesting in the second half when Zimbabwe took absolute control over the game. Azam FC Striker, Prince Dube made the magic for his side as he scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute. Surprisingly, Dube’s goal came from his first action in the game, one minute after he came into the game.

As it stands on the group standings, Algeria has booked their place in the 2022 AFCON in Cameroon. Moreover, Zimbabwe sits 2nd on the group table with 5 points, behind Botswana and Zambia who have 4 and 3 points respectively.

In their next group encounter, Zambia will host Algeria, while Botswana host Zimbabwe.
