Position Function

Parking Ambassador Needed in Canada: To maintain accessibility and availability of on-street parking, provide proactive customer service and education on-street by foot, scooter, or vehicle, and enforce parking prohibitions and regulations.

Key Duties

Provide proactive customer service that supports members of the public, the City’s tourism industry, and the overall customer experience by, for example, providing directions or information about City services. Serve as an ambassador for the City of Victoria, representing it favourably to pedestrians and drivers in the downtown area.

When member of the public is not present to be educated, issue warnings and enforce parking restrictions in a way that is consistent with the City’s customer service approach by issuing fines, watching out for complaints, and keeping an eye on paid parking, parking meters, loading zones, limited time zones, short-term parking places on City Parkades, tow routes, passenger zones, and residential parking. When issuing a ticket, gather proof of the violation by making pertinent notes and taking pictures.

Answer queries about everything from parking regulations to general inquiries in a professional manner while providing outstanding customer service. Address public concerns about unlawfully parked cars, instruct the public on using parking technology and equipment, and provide substitute parking options. When necessary, politely and promptly answer and reply to phone inquiries from parking services regarding parking problems and concerns.

Utilize a handheld device to locate, photograph, and report any problems in the neighborhood to the supervisor, such as overflowing trash cans, graffiti, or concerns with street maintenance. Report any necessary mechanical and maintenance needs to the supervisor. Relay to the supervisor any information that has been requested from other Departments. Recognize whether a scenario calls for a bylaw or police response, appreciate the value of refraining from engaging the public when conditions are escalating, and notify your supervisor of any escalating problems or encounters with the public.

The supervisor assigns the work and reviews it after it is finished.
Supervisors are contacted about issues.

Working Conditions

  • Physical Effort: Walk between 15 and 20 kilometers per day OR scoot between 50 and 100 kilometers per day OR operate a vehicle (continuous)

  • Mental Effort: Deal with conflicts, negative comments, and emotionally charged situations. (occasional).
  • Work Environment: Exposure to people who are verbally aggressive in public (occasional)
    In all weather conditions, go outside to work (continuous)

    Exposure to odors from automobiles and products used for recreational smoking (occasional).
    Exposure to noise from traffic (frequent).

Key Skills and Abilities

Grasp of Victoria’s geography, neighborhoods, downtown businesses’ demands, and the need for reliable parking services.

Per the Parking Ambassador customer service objective, reply promptly to customers and their problems.

Strong interpersonal and customer service abilities.

Recognize and follow city ordinances.

Current word processing software used by the City of Victoria is operational at a basic level.

The capacity to exercise solid judgment and determine when a situation requires escalation.

The capacity to keep reliable records.

Qualifications 

Grade 10.
Customer service training (30 hours)
Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence

Experience

Not required.

Work Schedule

Sunday, various shifts between 8:00am and 10:30pm
$28.24 per hour, Pay Grade 3 (Under Review)
